Donkey Kong kidnapped Princess Peach and was throwing barrels down winding slopes in which Mario had to avoid in order to get to the top and save the princess. It wasn't planned to have Mario be such a hit in fact he wasn't going to be until Nintendo got so many letters from fans saying how fun it was and that they loved the hero. He had no name back then. Now Mario is one of the most famous and most popular video game characters ever. He now has more games than almost any other game series ever made.
